TL;DR

  • Trust is the foundation of youth growth, and it is built through steady, everyday interactions.

  • Winter riding led us to Café Sazón, right off the W&OD, for delicious salteñas.

  • We were in the news; channel WUSA9!

  • Shop hours are expanding on Saturdays, service capacity is up, and new Cannondale bikes are arriving.

  • Bikes & Bow Ties returns March 19, and there are a few easy ways to support Phoenix right now.

On Youth

Building Trust with Youth

Leonel, one of our interns, preparing to assemble a new Cannondale

At Phoenix Bikes, we ask a lot of young people. We expect them to show up, learn real skills, take responsibility for their work, and see themselves as capable of more than they were yesterday.

That kind of growth depends on trust.

Research on youth programs shows that trust does not come from big moments or polished programs. Teenagers describe trust growing over time through adults who are steady, fair, and honest, especially when things go wrong.

Young people notice who keeps their word, who holds expectations, and who treats them like they can make real decisions. Trust grows when youth feel respected, not managed, and when adults stay present after mistakes, frustration, or conflict.

We see this in the shop every day. Trust is built in small moments. Showing up after a hard conversation. Holding a standard without embarrassment. Letting youth work through a problem instead of stepping in too fast. Challenging young people only works when the relationship underneath it is strong.

Young people do not need lower expectations.

They need adults who believe they can meet them and who stay when the work gets hard.

We build our programs around that belief.

This Week’s Destination

Salteñas at Café Sazón.

Some of you, like me, are crazy enough to ride a bike in this weather. Freezing Saddles energy. If you forget to log your miles, and end up with half-frozen hands, like I did, Café Sazón has excellent salteñas.

While you are there, the huevos rancheros are good. The champurradas, large sugar cookies, are also good. Honestly, I find myself going back more than necessary.

Café Sazón sits right off the W&OD Trail, which makes it an easy stop mid-ride. If you are riding this winter, it is worth the detour. See more here!

Café Sazón = delicious, but I might be biased. They know my order.

Sights from the Ride

Braving a Cold Ride, Scuba Steve Style!

Not a sight from a ride, more of a sight before a ride. I get cold looking at this!

Asa (Shop Manager) and Beth (Youth Programs Manager) about to embark on a cold, wet, dark ride home from the shop. They are either brave, or crazy.

Whoa, did you see our feature on WUSA9?

From the Shop

  • We are extending our Saturday hours to match the rest of the week. Starting February 7, 2026, the shop will be open Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

  • Maintenance service capacity is up. If you want an appointment, you can book one online.

  • If you cannot find a time that works, walk-ins are welcome. You can also call us at 703-575-7762.

  • A heads up. Service prices will be increasing soon. We have kept them very low, and it is time to rebalance. If you have been putting off a tune-up, now is a good time.

  • We also have new Cannondale bikes in stock. We became a Cannondale dealer a couple of months ago, and bikes are now arriving in the shop.

How You Can Help This Week

Three Things:

  • Come to our famous un-gala, Bikes & Bow Ties, March 19 at The Falls in Falls Church, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets, raffle entries, and merch are available here.

  • We also quietly launched an updated website. Go check it out. It was built by Lucy Day, one of our interns from Arlington Tech. It caused a bit of a stir on launch. Oops. Still proud of it.

  • Bring your bike in for a tune-up, of if you need a new ride, come on by. 100% of our sales proceeds go right back into our mission.

Fun Fact of the Day:
A bicycle is the most energy-efficient mode of transportation humans have ever built. For the amount of energy a rider puts in, a bike moves a person farther than walking, running, or driving
